Credit for Prior Learning

Credit for Prior Learning

If you have college level knowledge or experience in a specific technical area contact us to see how to receive credit for your prior learning. Credit for Prior Learning is a way for students to obtain credit for their knowledge, skills, and previous experience at no cost to the student. Students do not have to learn redundant material. Students save on the costs of tuition, books and fees. There are several ways for students to receive Credit for Prior Learning at State Tech:

Industry Credential/Licenses

Students who possess a current valid license or industry credential that is equivalent to a course offered at ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ may be awarded credit for that course. Credit approval should be sought by providing documentation of the current valid license or industry credential to the Registrar at registrar@statetechmo.edu.

Military Courses

The college awards educational credits to a student for a course that is part of the student’s military educational experiences or service that meets the standards of the American Council on Education or equivalent standards for awarding academic credit and that is determined to be equivalent to a course offered at ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ. Military credit approval should be sought through the Registrar at registrar@statetechmo.edu.

Credit by Examination/Test Out

This is an opportunity for students to receive college credit for college-level knowledge and skills obtained outside of college through faculty designed, course-specific examinations/test outs and if appropriate hands-on-demonstration of knowledge and skills. To schedule a test out, please contact the ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵTesting Center at testingcenter@statetechmo.edu.

Transfer Credit Information to Other Institutions

Educational requirements vary from one institution to another. For this reason, it is extremely important that students who plan to transfer to another institution work closely with the other institution on their course schedule. Information regarding institutions that have established transfer guide(s) with ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵcan be found on our Partner Institutions informational page.

Core Curriculum Transfer (Core 42)

Senate Bill 997 established the Higher Education Core Transfer Curriculum Act (Sections 178.785-789 RSMo), which directs the Coordinating Board for Higher Education to develop a standard core transfer curriculum and a common course numbering equivalency matrix for lower-division general education courses. The core transfer curriculum, known as CORE 42, is a framework for general education that all Missouri public two-and four-year institutions of higher education will adopt effective for the 2018-2019 academic year. The goal of the CORE 42 is to facilitate the seamless transfer of academic credits. The completion of the CORE 42 at any public institution of higher education will transfer to every other public institution of higher education in the state and substitute for the receiving institution’s general education requirement. Individual courses that comprise the CORE 42 are guaranteed to transfer one-to-one among all public colleges and universities.

²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵapproved CORE 42 courses and assigned MOTR numbers are in the college catalog and at the Missouri Department of Higher Education’s website. Visit the for additional information.

     Core 42 Appeal Process

²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ accepts CORE 42 courses as transfer credit when coursework is required for a student’s degree or certificate program. Students who are denied CORE 42 transfer credit may appeal the decision using the institution’s internal appeal process. The CORE 42 appeal process is as follows:

  1. Students who receive an initial denial must submit an appeal within 10 days to the Registrar’s Office. The course information will be submitted to the Department Chair for consideration and students will be notified within 10 working days of the result.
  2. If the transfer credit is denied and the student would like to further appeal the decision, a second appeal should be submitted to the Registrar’s Office within 10 days of the denial. The course information will be submitted to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for review and students will be notified within 10 working days of the result.
  3. If the transfer dispute is not resolved to the satisfaction of the student, a third appeal should be submitted to the Registrar’s Office within 45 days. ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ shall notify the Commissioner of Higher Education of its denial and the reasons for the denial. The Commissioner of Higher Education or his or her designee shall make the final determination about the dispute.

Credit by Commercially Available Exams

Transfer and high school students may be eligible to receive academic credit for Advanced Placement (AP) and College Level Examination Program (CLEP). Below is the AP and CLEP exam tables and the corresponding ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵcourse that a student will receive academic credit.
